I have a lot of measuring tapes and rulers in my shop. For most jobs, they do fine. But with some projects, tapes and rulers just don't work. Getting inside measurements can be tricky, especially with things like drawers and cabinets.

And getting an accurate reading between awkward edges is nearly impossible. Rulers aren't much help either, in small narrow spaces.
