Who Doesn't Need a Bookcase?

I can always use another bookcase or bookshelf somewhere in the house, even if it ends up in my basement filled with tools. That's one of the biggest reasons I decided to include a bookcase in my series My First Project. It's a perfect opportunity to put your basic building skills to work and create a fantastic piece of furniture—something that will provide years of service for you, your children, and your grandchildren!

Solid Wood Construction

If you've ever bought a cheap bookcase made of particle board, then you don't need me to tell you solid wood is a better choice. I used inexpensive 1x12 common pine for the sides, shelves, and top, and a few pieces of poplar for the cleats and trim. I used 1/4" plywood for the back of my bookcase, but there are a variety of different materials available if you prefer making a more decorative backer.
