EZ Pergola Designs - How to Build a Pergola the Easy Way

A lot of the houses in my neighborhood have small decks just off the kitchen or dining room. Unfortunately the sun beats down so hard they can't really be used for anything. A great solution to this problem is to build a small, attached pergola just above the deck or patio. The rafters and slats do an amazing job of cutting down just enough sun to make the space a pleasant place to be - even during the hottest part of a summer's day.

EZ Pergola Plans

You don't have to be a carpenter to build this pergola attached to house. The plan doesn't require expensive tools or complicated joinery to bring all the pieces together for this DIY project.

Pergola Plans - PlansNOW

Overall, this is a very nice design for a simple-looking pergola that's not so simple to build. If you're the type that likes a challenge, you'll like the tricks and turns that are included in this plan.

Pergola Plans - Wood Magazine

Like all plans from Wood magazine, the instructions and illustrations in this pergola plan are large and easy to read. I also like how the drawings are on their own separate pages.

Pergola Plans - Lowes

The tricky part in this mount-below-deck approach is making sure the four hole locations you lay out on your deck floor are perfectly square to each other (this is called the footprint).

Pergolas provide the ideal blend of shade and sunlight for outdoor decks and patios. Most plan designs are fairly simple to build, showing you how to use common hand tools and easy-to-find materials. If you build a pergola that attaches to the side of your house (above your deck) you'll avoid the some of the more daunting challenges that come with building a free-standing structure.
